Exploring Fine Art Education with Cadet Band at Crismon High School

Cadet band at Crismon High School

Fine arts courses play a crucial role in shaping well-rounded students by enhancing skills that extend beyond the arts. The abilities gained in these classes are valuable across subjects, including math and science. One fine art course, cadet band, helps 7th and 8th grade students develop individual music skills and teamwork. The skills taught in this course help young musicians learn how to be responsible for their own performance, but also support each other in a group setting.

Scott Lloyd, the Crismon High School (CHS) cadet band teacher, stresses the importance of self-discipline. Not only are students taught to play the correct notes, but are also encouraged to be a part of the overall harmony of the group. Every rehearsal and performance is seen as an opportunity for personal growth and collaborative success, ensuring that no one is left out.

Two cadet band members, Michelle O. and Kennedy M., share how cadet band has helped further shape their musical talents. Michelle, who plays the saxophone, joined cadet band because of her passion for music and playing the saxophone at her church. Michelle enjoys the challenge of sight-reading new pieces and appreciates how band has helped in her academic life. “Playing new pieces in school, sight reading and playing at football games.” is what Michelle finds to be most rewarding.

Kennedy, a flutist, enjoys the complexity of learning music and finds that it not only aligns with her love for music but also helps with skills like counting and rhythm, which translate to other areas of study, such as math. When asked why other students should consider band, Kennedy said “I would tell them to take band because it could help them in their academics.” For Kennedy, band gives her the opportunity to engage with others as music is a universal language that can be understood around the world.

The CHS cadet band’s first performance will be on September 9 and showcase music from The Magnificent Seven.
