Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary Sixth Grader Recognized as School Connect Student Champion

Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary (KMBE) sixth grader Nico Bishop was recently honored as a School Connect Student Champion finalist—a title awarded to students who demonstrate exceptional leadership and a heart for serving others.
“I felt really good. Like I had accomplished something really great in my life,” Nico shared when asked about being a finalist. The School Connect Student Champion honor is reserved for “students who go beyond the classroom to cheer others on, lead by example, and positively impact their school communities.”
At Queen Creek Unified School District (QCUSD), creating student leadership is a key priority. QCUSD empowers students to develop strong character, take initiative, and support one another—values Nico displays daily at Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary. “My favorite part [about KMBE] is all the friendly people here—how they help people grow as a person,” Nico said.
Nico was nominated for his kindness, positivity, and commitment to inclusion. “I help my friends and I love to include others and many people. I just love being a good guy,” he said. This simple but powerful approach to leadership embodies what School Connect calls “great-hearted leadership”—a style marked by encouragement and compassion.
Being a leader, Nico noted, comes with its challenges but also its rewards. “I learned that it takes a lot of responsibility, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy,” he said with a smile.
QCUSD is proud of students like Nico who are stepping up as role models in their schools. Congratulations to Nico Bishop on this well-deserved recognition—you are a shining example of leadership in action!
