Sherriann Holtey: Eastmark High School’s Dedicated Educator in the Running for America’s Favorite Teacher

Sherriann Holtey in the runnings for America's favorite teacher

For 25 years, Sherriann Holtey has shaped the minds of Arizona students, instilling mathematical skills, resilience, and problem-solving abilities. Now, the Eastmark High School (EHS) math teacher is in the running for America’s favorite teacher, highlighting her impact on student success and her dedication to teaching.

Holtey’s education journey began in a Title I inner-city school, where she spent 21 years teaching high school-level math to seventh and eighth graders. She specialized in algebra and geometry while emphasizing support for gifted students and those who needed intervention. As a graduate of Arizona State University and a Chandler native, Holtey transitioned to Queen Creek in 2021 to continue her passion for high school math at Eastmark High School.

Her classroom is a place of energy, engagement, and encouragement. “If I’m bored, the students are bored,” she explained, which is why she creates interactive review games, scavenger hunts, and hands-on problem-solving activities to keep students engaged. One of her favorite lessons involves maximizing the volume of a box, showing students real-world applications of math.

But beyond equations and formulas, Holtey focuses on building confidence and determination. She recalled an email from a former student who thanked her for teaching a simple yet powerful lesson: take things one step at a time. “That message meant a lot to me,” she said. “As a teacher, you never really know what sticks with students. But when you hear that something you said made an impact, it’s an incredible feeling.”

Holtey’s dedication to her students has not gone unnoticed. The support she receives from parents, students, and colleagues at Eastmark makes the school a special place to teach. “The teachers work incredibly hard, and I believe anyone at this school could be America’s Favorite Teacher,” she said. “The students are charismatic, hardworking, and kind. The strong parental involvement here is something I deeply appreciate.”

For Holtey, being named America’s favorite teacher isn’t just about personal recognition—it’s about showcasing the excellence of Eastmark High School. “If I win, it would show how incredible all of Eastmark’s teachers are, not just me,” she said. “This is for everyone.”
