A Feast of Cultures: QCUSD Hosts International Food Day
The Queen Creek Unified School District’s (QCUSD) Family Resource Center (FRC) hosted its annual International Food Day, an event that celebrates culture and brings together the community to honor the traditions and backgrounds of its students. The event served as a vibrant culmination of the first half of the school year, reflecting the FRC’s mission to support lifelong learning. International Food Day featured a buffet-style lunch where students from over 15 countries shared dishes from their native cuisines, allowing attendees to experience the flavors and heritage of different cultures.
Maria Ochoa, a dedicated teacher at the FRC, explained the importance of the event: “It’s a day to build community, celebrate diversity, and share our program with others. It’s something that both students and staff eagerly anticipate.”
The FRC offers a variety of educational programs aimed at empowering adult learners. These include English as a Second Language (ESL), High School Equivalency (HSC) classes for GED preparation, and Integrated Education and Training (IET) courses that blend language learning with practical skills.
Many students attending these programs are parents and grandparents who juggle responsibilities but remain committed to advancing their education. Ochoa noted the resilience of these learners, stating, “It’s so gratifying to see them use what they learn immediately, whether it’s at work or helping their children with homework. They inspire us with their determination and willingness to grow.”
Superintendent Dr. Perry Berry, who attended the event, expressed his admiration for the students and staff. “This event is a perfect opportunity to celebrate our students’ progress and thank the teachers for their incredible work,” he shared.
“Meeting students from so many different countries and hearing their stories is truly inspiring.” Dr. Berry added that while the food was a definite highlight, the best part was witnessing the connections and gratitude shared in the FRC.
The Family Resource Center continues to be a cornerstone of support for those in QCUSD. Events like International Food Day exemplify the center’s commitment to creating a welcoming environment where everyone’s culture and efforts are celebrated.
