Through embodying their motto of “everyone has genius, and everyone can be a leader,” Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary (KMBE) has earned its Lighthouse Certification. Schools that earn this certification demonstrate a high level of leadership and academic achievement that extends beyond staff to students and the community. This past Friday, KMBE held a Lighthouse assembly to “celebrate with all of our students and staff that we are a model Leader in Me school,” says KMBE Principal Dawn Harrington.

Principal Harrington continues, “This special honor represents every student, every teacher and staff member, and our entire school community. It recognizes all we’ve put into living the eight habits, showing leadership, setting goals, and helping each other grow.”

Leadership skills developed at KMBE through the Leader in Me program are school-wide and have made an overwhelmingly positive impact on the school’s environment. “Every day, we’re proving that leadership isn’t about being in charge—it’s about making positive choices and making a difference wherever we are,” says Principal Harrington.

Like a lighthouse, students, teachers, and staff “stand strong, shine brightly, and help guide others” at KMBE. Principal Harrington and her staff firmly believe that everyone brings unique talents, strengths, and gifts that make KMBE and the world a better place.

When asked how earning this certification felt, Principal Harrington replied with pride, “I am so proud of each of them for making our school a place where everyone belongs, everyone can lead, and everyone has the opportunity to succeed. We will continue to shine our light and inspire others!”

Shine bright with KMBE and enroll today as a Lighthouse Certified Leader in Me School.
