At Queen Creek Junior High (QCJH), the library serves as a community gathering space where students can discover new stories and develop a deep appreciation for reading. At the heart of that experience is library media aide Cheryl Morris, whose passion for books and dedication to helping students find the right story have inspired countless readers.
Morris has helped create an environment where students feel comfortable spending time before school and during lunch. Whether they’re working on homework, putting together a puzzle, reading, playing games, or participating in a quick craft activity, students are encouraged to make the library their own.
For Morris, helping students find the right book is one of the most rewarding parts of her job. A lifelong reader herself, she enjoys matching students with stories that fit their interests and encouraging them to keep exploring until they find a book they love.
“I am a voracious reader,” Morris said. “I obviously am a big reader, and I encourage the students here to read as well. I try to help them pick out the best fit of a book for them. It can be challenging, but it is a challenge which I like.”
Reading gives students the opportunity to explore new ideas and perspectives beyond their everyday experiences. As Morris explained, “That’s the whole point of reading, is losing yourself in other worlds and going places that you normally wouldn’t be able to go to.”
Her advice for students is simple: “Keep trying. Just because the first book you pick up isn’t one that you liked, you’re going to find a book you like. You’ve just got to keep trying.”
