Queen Creek Unified School District (QCUSD) offers 32 career and technical education (CTE) programs across three high schools. With a wide variety of programs, there is something for every student, including Aaron at Crismon High School, who is in Stagecraft. The Stagecraft program teaches technical, behind-the-scenes, and management skills for theater and live productions.
Aaron was first inspired to take Stagecraft through his dad and his love for building. “I’ve always liked doing things hands-on. My dad is great at building sets, so I thought I would want to get into it.”
Last school year, Aaron helped with behind-the-scenes set work in The Play That Goes Wrong. As the name suggests, in this play everything goes wrong, so Aaron was tasked with making sure set-piece stunts were executed safely.
“I was in charge of dropping a flat safely so the actors weren’t endangered. We rehearsed it multiple times to make sure it was safe.” Through the experience, Aaron also developed problem-solving skills when “things went wrong that weren’t supposed to go wrong.”
The skills developed in the Stagecraft CTE class will help Aaron throughout his career. As he says, “The skills that I’m learning in stagecraft and theater in general will help me throughout my life, no matter what I do.”
In addition to hands-on learning, Aaron says the experiences in Stagecraft will help him beyond the classroom. “I think the thing that’s going to help me the most is communication skills and working well with others.”
