Every student in Queen Creek Unified School District (QCUSD) has a unique path to success. Through personalized learning opportunities, career-focused programs, clubs, athletics, fine arts, and extracurricular activities, students are encouraged to discover their passions and build the skills needed for life beyond graduation.
For Queen Creek High School class of 2022 graduate Mikayla Askey, those opportunities became the foundation for a career in education. Today, as she prepares to welcome students into her own classroom as a first-year teacher, she credits QCUSD’s dedicated educators and hands-on learning experiences for helping her become the person and teacher she is today.
One experience that continues to stand out is Queen Creek High School’s parallel learning program, where Askey worked alongside students with different learning needs. The class provided practical experience that extended far beyond the classroom.
“The parallel learning class gave me so many skills that I didn’t even learn in college, and they’re skills I’ll carry with me throughout my career.”
While QCUSD strives to prepare every student for success after graduation, the support doesn’t end when students receive their diploma. “I’ve had teachers who have continued to reach out, support me, and be resources throughout my education and even after graduating,” said Askey.
Those meaningful connections inspired Askey to pursue a career where she can make the same difference in the lives of future students.
“I’m preparing for my first year of teaching by looking back at the teachers who made learning meaningful and using those experiences to shape the kind of teacher I want to become.”
Beyond academics, QCUSD equips students with the confidence and real-world skills needed to thrive in college and the workforce. Through programs like FFA, career and technical education courses, and community partnerships, Askey gained valuable leadership, communication, and networking experience.
“The networking opportunities at Queen Creek High School gave me the confidence to connect with professors, interview professionally, and start my career.”
Looking back on her own journey, Askey encourages today’s students to embrace every opportunity that comes their way.
“Say yes as much as possible. Even if opportunities seem intimidating or scary, they could end up being the best experiences of your life.”
