Crismon High's Ben Brandau Recognized as Arizona’s Top PE Educator

Crismon High's Ben Brandau

Ben Brandau, Crismon High School’s (CHS) strength and conditioning coach, has been honored with the Arizona Health and Physical Education’s High School Teacher of the Year Award. Brandau's dedication to physical education and bettering students' lives in every setting, athletics and otherwise, earned him this recognition. Brandau was selected for this award through peer nomination and a rigorous review process.

“This award is different,” he noted. “Strength conditioning has been a big part of my career, but this feels closer to my degree and the field I originally fell in love with. It’s an honor to be recognized for making an impact.” While Brandau is a strength and conditioning coach, his initial passion was and continues to be physical education.

Over his 23-year career, Brandau has had a lasting impact on students, some of whom still reach out years later to thank him. One former student even credited Brandau for setting him on a new life path. “When someone reaches out years later to tell you how you changed their life, it reminds you of the difference you’re making.”

Brandau chose CHS for the unique opportunity to help shape its culture as a new school. Brandau’s commitment goes beyond teaching techniques; it’s about instilling habits to promote lifelong fitness. Brandau is especially proud to be impacting students in his own community.

“We are making an impact. If you can make one connection with a kid, it might change their entire life,” noted Brandau. When asked how to encourage other teachers, he states “If you see someone excelling, nominate them. Acknowledgment is so important.” He also thanks Crismon High School and the Arizona Health and Physical Education Committee for allowing him the platform to make a difference.
