Newell Barney College Prep Band: Celebrating Music and Community

March is Music in Our Schools Month, a time to recognize the power of music education. At Newell Barney College Prep (NBCP), the band program exemplifies the impact of music on students, inspiring creativity, collaboration, and an appreciation of the arts.

For these band students, it’s more than just a class. Band is an opportunity to explore their passions and connect with others. Brandon, a percussionist, joined band at first because it looked like a great time. “It’s like a time to take a break, have fun, and explore new instruments.”

Liam B., another percussionist, was inspired to join band because of his father, who was a band director. He enjoys learning various instruments and collaborating with his peers. This year, Liam was chosen to participate in the honor band. “In honor band, we got pieces of music to practice on our own, then we all came together and performed at ASU Gammage. It was an informative experience, and I got to learn from college students. It helped me evolve my band skills,” he shared.

For Madisyn R., music is deeply connected to her heritage. “Music runs in my family. When I first went to pick an instrument, I was set on a horn, but then my father told me about our Puerto Rican and Mexican heritage, and I chose percussion,” she explained. “Both cultures love music, especially drums and guitars. Band lets me embrace that part of who I am.”

James P. initially joined because of his friends but quickly discovered a newfound appreciation for learning music. “My favorite thing about band is socializing and playing different songs with my friends. It really opens up your music taste,” he said.

The NBCP band program is not just about playing music—it’s about teamwork, self-expression, and personal growth. Whether driven by family influence or a love for rhythm, these students have found a meaningful place in the Honors Band. As Liam puts it, “Band helps you learn more about yourself, make friends, and even explore career paths.”
