At Newell Barney College Prep, our staff and teachers make sure to provide the best learning environment needed to help students be successful. NBCP has an accelerated curriculum that exposes students to more challenging work and a deeper understanding of complex concepts.
“ My favorite thing about NBCP is how everyone is friends and how the teachers are so nice and provide so much support”- Avelise Cabrera, 8th-grade student council member.
Classes
The required 8th-grade core classes are Algebra 1, physical science, accelerated ELA, and accelerated social studies. The 7th-grade core classes that are required to take are pre-algebra, accelerated ELA, accelerated science, and accelerated social studies.
At NBCP, everyone is required to take one STEM elective for a semester. The STEM electives are green architecture, robotics, app creators, medical detectives, and design and modeling. The other electives include journalism, careers, weights, PE, art, band, and orchestra. Although in some schools Spanish is an elective, at NBCP it is required to take the class. 8th-graders who have been at this school for 7th- grade take Spanish 2, and new 7th graders take Spanish 1.
Lunch and Learn
The teachers here try their best to provide support to all students by providing lunch and learn. Lunch and learn is where students go to certain classes at lunch to work on missing assignments or retake tests.
Certain teachers also sometimes provide tutoring for whoever needs help in the subject they teach. If a teacher needs you to go in on a certain day, your 4th hour teacher will give you a pass that says where you need to go, and what it is for, so that it is required to go to lunch and learn on that day.
Schedule
At NBCP, we have nine total class hours. There is first period, second period, third period, fourth period, lunch, achievement hour, seventh period, eighth period, and then ninth period is the end of our day. In achievement hour, the teachers reteach math skills, science, and ELA skills to students who need it. There are different classrooms for the teacher and students who are also struggling in that certain class, based on your grade, assignment scores, or test scores for that specific class.
Leader in Me
NBCP is a Leader in Me school, which teaches us how to act in certain situations and how to be a better person. Every morning, in first period, we have a LIM objective that we have to write down, and sometimes we fill out worksheets based on the topic we are learning.
“My favorite thing about NBCP is the culture and community at our school” -Marisol Fredenburg, 8th-grade student council member.
Credit
Our school gives high school credit in social studies, math, and Spanish. These credits can carry over to high school, and then you don’t have to take that class for a certain year.
