Turning Passion into Opportunity: QCHS Student Earns Esports Scholarship

As Esports continues to grow in popularity, so do the opportunities that come with it. For some students, video game skills can open doors to scholarships, teamwork, and a sense of belonging. Ryan Dravis, a senior at Queen Creek High School (QCHS), recently earned a college scholarship through his success in Esports tournaments. Programs like Esports also give students a place to build friendships and unwind after school.

“I started going to tournaments and doing pretty well. People started noticing me.” Ryan explains how he got his scholarship to Paradise Valley Community College. “It felt great to earn the scholarship. It’s a lot of free money, and it’s really cool knowing I saved a lot just from playing Smash Bros.”

Like traditional athletics, Esports contributes to school culture and helps students feel connected to their peers. Ryan says the team environment is one of the best parts of the program.

“Everyone gets along well. We had a new player join the varsity team this year, and he fit in really quickly. We’re a pretty tight-knit group.” Ryan said.

QCHS Esports coach Mr. Ramirez says the program has developed a strong group of competitors, including some of the top players in the state. He believes the program’s success is also inspiring the next generation of players.

“What’s even better is that our younger players see those seniors as role models. They want to reach that same level and continue building the program.”

Mr. Ramirez also emphasizes that the Esports program creates opportunities for students to grow and take on leadership roles.

“It gives them motivation. If they practice and put in the effort, they can move up the rankings. It doesn’t matter if they’re a freshman or a senior; everyone has the opportunity to improve and compete for varsity.”

For students considering joining Esports, Ryan has simple advice.

“If you want to do it, just do it. Some people might joke about it, but it really doesn’t matter. It’s fun, and if you like video games, you should try it.”
