Queen Creek High School (QCHS) is filled with extraordinary students who continue to raise the bar. One of these students is Keegan Roque, a senior who is highly involved in his high school experience. Along with strong academic performance, Keegan is making waves in JROTC and wrestling. As a battalion S2 officer, he has developed strong leadership and management skills and has been awarded numerous scholarships to support his next steps after graduation.
When asked about JROTC, Keegan said, “It’s been the best thing I could’ve done for my leadership development. I’ve seen great leaders lead by example. I’ve also had the chance to put my own skills to the test. There’s so much hands-on experience in the program that, over time, you develop leadership whether you like it or not.”
His commitment to JROTC has paid off, as Keegan was “awarded a four-year Marine scholarship, a three-year Army ROTC scholarship, and a couple of smaller ones as well.” He explains that his commitment began with his family, as he has a long line of military service around him. “A lot of my family has served—my dad, grandparents, great-grandparents, and my sister—so that definitely influenced me,” he continues, adding, “Once I got exposed to it, I saw the opportunities, benefits, and chance to travel. Most importantly, I like the idea of serving my country and leading others.”
With a full plate, balancing school and extracurriculars can become overwhelming. Keegan stays focused by setting clear priorities. “I plan things out, set aside time for schoolwork, and make sure my priorities are straight. I can’t hang out with friends if my work isn’t done.”
When asked how wrestling has helped him, Keegan shared a message from his coach: “My coach always says, ‘Lose the right way.’ At first, I didn’t understand it, but it’s about building good habits. If you lose the right way, eventually you’ll win the right way.”
Keegan also shares advice for new students entering high school. “I’d tell them to try as much as they can. If something interests you, go for it. I haven’t regretted any of the programs I’ve joined. I’ve traveled, met great people, and had so many opportunities just by trying new things.”
