At Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary (KMBE), students took center stage this week during the school’s annual “Everyone Has Genius Day,” a celebration of leadership, creativity, and the unique strengths within every child.

The day began with a powerful, student-led Leadership Assembly. Student leaders from LOL, STUCO, and Lighthouse teams guided the program as emcees, while the choir performed the National Anthem and cheerleaders signed the Bobcat school song. A student from Hands Up Club signed the Pledge of Allegiance in ASL, and students shared the 8 Leader in Me habits, offering personal examples of how they apply them in their daily lives. “Each part of the assembly is led by students,” organizers shared, “showing what leadership looks like in action.” The assembly also featured remarks from community guest speakers, along with Dr. Berry and Dr. Copeland.

But the true heart of the day came after the assembly, when classrooms transformed into a schoolwide gallery walk. Families were invited to explore student projects as children proudly showcased their “genius.”

So, what is “genius”? At KMBE, it’s defined as the unique strengths, passions, and talents every student possesses. From preschool through sixth grade, students explored these passions through research and creativity, presenting their learning through posters, videos, and hands-on projects.

“Genius Day gives students the opportunity to explore what they love,” Rachelle Hayes, KMBE Dean of Students, explained. “It’s about helping them discover what makes them unique.”

That discovery is exactly why events like this matter. When students are encouraged to “Show Their Genius,” it reshapes how they view themselves. “When students recognize their strengths, it builds confidence and changes how they see themselves as learners and leaders,” organizers said. Beyond academics, the experience fosters responsibility, collaboration, and goal-setting, skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

Most importantly, “Everyone Has Genius Day” reminds students of one powerful truth: each of them has something valuable to contribute.
