Course Description: This course will trace AZ/US history from the colonial period to the present. Major topics of study will include: colonial settlement, formation of the Constitution, War of 1812, Gadsden Purchase, Revolutionary War, Westward Expansion, Civil War, Reconstruction, the growth of business/industry, immigration to the US, Spanish-American War, WWI, WWII, Cold War events, Civil Rights, Vietnam, and will conclude with the current events in US History.  The course will enhance students’ abilities in written/oral expression, problem-solving, and working cooperatively with peers. There WILL be regular homework assignments. Students will be involved in individual and group activities throughout the course. Oral presentations and participation will also be required.

America:Pathways to the Present. Cayton, Perry, Winkler: Prentice Hall, 2005.

 

Grading:

All assignments are to be put into the teacher’s assignment basket. It is the student’s responsibility to see that work is turned in on time. Late work WILL NOT be accepted!!! All tests/daily work will be graded in the following manner:

 Attendance: Since full and active participation is essential to success in this course, good attendance is expected and required.  In the event of an excused absence, it is the student’s responsibility to ask for make-up work upon their return to class. They will have the same amount of days to turn in the work as they were absent.  School Policy will be strictly adhered to regarding tardies and unexcused absences

 

Suggested Materials Needed:

Folder/notebook

Pens/Pencils

3 Ring Binder and Dividing tabs (one specifically for history)

Poster board when needed. The teacher will give students notice when this is required.

 Behavioral Overview::

Show respect for your peers and the instructor at all times.

Follow directions the first time they are given.

Food and beverages may only be consumed outside the classroom.

Always sit in your assigned seat.

All students must be in their assigned seats and working on the board activity BEFORE the final bell sounds.

The bell is for the teacher; students are to remain in their seats until dismissed.

NO ELECTRONICS OF ANY KIND ALLOWED.

No HATS on in the classroom

There may be a time when you need to leave class, you MUST have a pass at all times. Note:  Passes will not be given the first, during class activities of instruction and last 10 minutes of class.

 Consequences:

1st Infraction:

Warning/Conference with student

2nd Infraction:

Notification of parent/guardian; possible detention

3rd Infraction:

Conference/meeting with parent/guardian; possible detention

4th Infraction:

Written referral to administration

 PLEASE NOTE:  Based on the severity of the offense, the initial consequence could result in a modification of the original steps.

 Student Responsibilities:

Come to class prepared EVERYDAY (i.e. bring pen/pencil, paper, homework and your history book).

Label all papers in the upper right hand corner.  Include your FIRST and LAST name, the date and the period you have this class.

NOTE: If you are absent, you must write “absent” on your paper or it will be counted as late and will result in NO credit for the assignment.

Students have one day for every day they are absent to complete any/all work that was missed while they were absent. If an absence is unexcused, you will receive a zero for the assignment.

Write neatly.  If the teacher can’t read the work, it can’t be graded.

Feel free to come in for extra help before school or after school.

* Parents will be contacted if academic/behavioral problems persist.

 

 *  Grades will be printed out every other week. They will be sent home for parent signatures!   It is our hope that this increased communication will avert any academic problems.
