Class Name: 10th Grade English Major areas of study include
fine-tuning of the six traits in publication quality, emphasizing coherence,
ideas and content development, word choice, conventions, voice and
organization. Students will
demonstrate an understanding of the basic forms of writing as well as the
writing process. In alignment with the
writing, students will demonstrate reading comprehension skills at a tenth
grade level, as well as the skills of effective group/ individual formal and
informal presentations. Various
themes, cultural dynamics and literary analysis will be studied in all genres
(short story, novel, poetry and drama) with an emphasis on literary format
and devices utilized to create fiction and non fiction. This class included homework, extensive
vocabulary study, research projects and independent reading. Textbooks used: The Language of
Literature, McDougal Littell textbook, various literary texts
including: Fahrenheit 451, 12 Angry Men, Julius Caesar, To Kill a
Mockingbird, and more to be announced throughout the school year Materials Needed: Each
student will need to bring a 1-subject, spiral bound notebook for
journals. I am not picky about the
wide or college ruled paper, but a spiral binding is a must! This will remain in the classroom and will
be used everyday. These can be found
for about 10-20 cents on sale at most major stores as a back-to-school
special. Students will also need a
blue or black ink pen, pencil, red grading pen or pencil, colored pencils, a
folder to store papers in, and plenty of paper. If there is any problem obtaining these
items, please let me know. Major Areas of
Study, Course Objective/Competencies: The English Department at Queen
Creek High School uses the Arizona State Standards as a curriculum. The language standards are broken down into
the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking, viewing and presenting,
and technology. A comprehensive list
of the standards can be viewed on the Arizona Board of Education web site or
you can view a copy in your student’s classroom. A comprehensive final is given at the end
of each semester. Grading: Semester points are cumulative and
will be assessed on all classroom assignments and activities. The grading system breaks down as follows:
A= 90%; B=89-80%; C=79-70%; D=69-60%; F=59%.
Extra credit is offered at several times throughout the year, make
sure you listen in class for opportunities; extra credit will only be given
at the teacher’s discretion. Please
check Snapgrades regularly to be aware of grades, and to contact me with any
concerns or problems within the week the assignment is entered. Please note that grades can and will impact
the eligibility to play sports and participate in other school
activities. Late work: Late
work is not accepted for students who are present in class; students may turn
in work for half credit the day after the assignment is due- No late work
will be accepted after this time.
According to school policy, students with excused absences have two
days for each day they are absent to make up missing work. However, final essays/papers and
term/semester final projects are to be turned in the day they are due. If a student is absent they will need to
email me their project, have a parent/guardian drop it off, or send it to
school with a friend. Please do not
ask for exceptions as this policy exists to be fair to all students. Management Plan:
This class will strictly follow the all school and district policies. 1. Be on
time and prepared. 2. Respect people and property. 3. Follow
directions. 4. Keep
hands, feet and other objects to yourself. Follow all school rules. Consequences: “If a student chooses to break a rule” First Offense: Documented
