Mighty, Mighty Fifth Grade

     I am looking forward to an awesome year!

     We will begin a long story.  It is the story of US – the United States of America.  It is an exciting adventure full of strange ideas, unusual people, dangerous journeys, mysterious disappearances, pirates, princesses, and much more!  It will take a whole year to tell the story, and when we are done you will understand a lot more about why the world is the way it is today.  Each quarter you will have a project to work on.  First quarter is mapping the U.S.  Second quarter is a report about a person in history during the Colonial period or creating Colonial village.  You will be doing a State Report & Project which will encourage you to learn about our great country during the third quarter, and the final project will be a timeline about U.S. history; you can choose to do the westward movement across the continent or the Presidents of the United States.

     Our reading program includes Accelerated Reader as well as our reading book in the classroom.  We will focus on vocabulary skills and reading comprehension skills.  We will also be using our Social Studies books to practice our reading skills.

     We have a fabulous math program that includes Accelerated Math.  Each student will be working on their own worksheet of the skills that need to be mastered in 5th grade.  They are expected to master approximately 80 objectives in the year.

    Science gives us a marvelous opportunity to explore the world around us.  Our curriculum includes space exploration so we are planning to visit a planetarium in the spring.  We will be doing experiments in class and even building rockets to be launched around the time we go to the panetarium.

     We integrate our computer technology and writing skills into every aspect of our curriculum.  Homework assignments will reinforce what we have learned during the day so please expect your child to have homework Monday through Thursday nights.
