Dear Newell Barney Middle School Parents,

I am so very excited to have the opportunity to work with all of the Newell Barney Middle School staff, parents and students as we open a new school.  The School Facility Board approved the opening of this middle school three years ago so this has been a dream come true to Queen Creek Unified School District.  We have worked many hours behind the scenes with the architect to 1) create the design, 2) purchase the land and 3) build a school that will be ready to open its doors by the first day of school.  The ground breaking occurred in May 2007 and here we are today. The school board voted to dedicate the name for the new middle school to a well known Queen Creek resident.  Mr. Newell Barney has been an integral part of Queen Creek throughout his life.  Therefore, “Newell Barney Middle School” will proudly display his name on the Marque and recognize and thank him for all of his many years of dedication to the youth of our community. After the school was named, the next step was to select the Queen Creek Middle School mascot. The students and staff selected the Newell Barney Buccaneers as the mascot and maroon, navy, and Vegas gold as the school colors.  I want to praise the wonderful artwork of middle school parent Lori Call who creating our mascot.  The school motto is “BELIEVE-ACHIEVE-SUCCEED.” The teachers began meeting last spring to bring this motto to life.  The goal of Queen Creek Unified School District is to have both middle schools offer the same challenging classes, curriculum and extra curricular activities.  We have worked very hard to make this happen. We want a student who may attend one campus to be able to attend the other middle school and learn the same curriculum.  The staff have decided to have a “Backpack Free” campus. This was decided after reviewing years of parents voicing their health concerns regarding heavy backpacks.  Teachers came up with a solution that allows students to only carry a three inch ring binder.  We will be teaching organizational skills; so believe it or not, the three ring binder is all that is necessary. A classroom set of textbooks will be available for students to use in class. If a student needs a textbook at home, the textbook can be checked out through the library.  The math and science textbooks have a web site address so that students may access them from home.  The final advantage of not having backpacks is safety in the classroom.  No more tripping over backpacks! Please refer to the calendar of events found on this webpage to view upcoming events and information on extra curricular activities. All staff will have an e-mail link so you may e-mail your child’s teachers at any time.  Communication is one of the keys to your child’s success in school.  A form will be coming home requesting an e-mail address to keep parents informed.
